Checkmate patterns explained: Back Rank Mate

A back rank mate occurs when a rook or queen delivers checkmate along the first or eighth rank, trapping the king behind its own pawns. This is one of the most common mating patterns in chess and often results from neglecting to create an escape square (luft) for the king.
